It is with great pleasure that I welcome you, as part of our educational
Our staff has been very busy this summer. We have participated in staff development workshops and trainings which enabled us to further our expertise in various curriculum areas and refine classroom management skills. We also have spent valuable time previewing instructional materials for use in our educational programs.
Our focus is always providing each child with new challenges that will result in a rewarding school experience. We will be continuing and refining our “Safe, Kind and Responsible” behavior program. Students are taught what it means to be safe, kind and responsible in every school location and then intermittently rewarded when they are caught being safe, kind and responsible.
As we begin this year, please remember that this is your school and we welcome your involvement. Since we recognize that parents are their children’s first and most important teachers, we need your cooperation and involvement to provide your child with the best education possible. Take time to review and/or talk with your children about their school experiences. Your interest and concern in their school progress will motivate them to do their best. Maintain contact with your child’s teachers and related service staff members to establish a successful home/school connection. To begin you may want to visit our Facebook page, H L Suverkrup Elementary School or Twitter @ Suverkrup.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call our office at 928-373-3500 or click on my name at the end of this letter to send me an email. I look forward to working with you and your child throughout the school year to provide a productive and safe learning environment that leads to student achievement.
Important Kinder Information
2013-2014 Kinder Student Pick-up Plan
The former system of “some go to parent pick up, some go to the bus and some wait in the office” is no longer working. Between the parent-pick-up and the wait-in-the-office students we didn’t always know where to find a student. And I absolutely cannot live with that. So I did my research and found that my sister schools all have parents/siblings sign-out kinder students at the classroom. So that’s how we will do it too. Please park and wait near the office until the 3:05/1:35 bell. Then proceed to the classroom to pick up your child. Or if your child has an older sibling they can go sign them out and walk home or over to parent pick-up with the younger sibling. Thank you for your understanding in the adjustment of this procedure.
After School Parking Lot Situation
HLS is sharing our campus with Crane’s newest school, Gowan Science Academy. Gowan Science has 240 students and they are using the “new wing” on the north side of our campus. Their hours are 8:00 am to 2:50 pm. Our hours are 8:15 am to 3:05 pm. We don’t anticipate a problem in the morning but we do know the afternoons are always congested – and adding 240 students will only add to the issue. To help us you can plan to not even arrive until 3:00 pm. By that time we hope most of the Gowan Science students will have been picked up. In the past parents arrive as early as 20 minutes early to begin the line-up of cars. This absolutely will not work this year – please stay away until 3:00.
No matter how we work it, our parking lot will always be crazy in the afternoon. Our entrance is on a major street so back-ups are extra noticeable. Also we don’t have the obvious neighborhood streets nearby for parents to stake out. If you feel comfortable you may ask your child to meet you in a nearby location. Some used are: The Oasis Church parking lot – and we will have a crossing guard to help them across Avenue C. Or you can use the LDS Church parking lot on the other side of our District Office – all west of our campus. The third option is West 15th Street, the neighborhood just behind our school to the north.

School Supply Lists
This is the time of year many parents stop by the office to see if we have a list of requested school supplies. We can save you a trip in the heat by posting it here. Please remember, all supply lists are requests only and not required. We appreciate everything you do to help us stretch our supply dollars. Thank you!
